Message from the Head of the Department

Welcome to the Department of Nano Science Technology, Faculty of Technology, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka.

Materials are at the heart of nearly every technological advance, and nanotechnology now allows us to engineer them at the smallest scales. Our Department prepares graduates to lead in this rapidly evolving field.

Through the Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours Degree in Material and Nano Science Technology, we combine strong scientific foundations with hands-on laboratory training, research, and industrial exposure. Alongside technical expertise, we nurture analytical thinking, communication, teamwork, and professional integrity, guided by a firm commitment to safety, ethics, and sustainability.

Through partnerships with industry, research institutions, and the community, we enrich student learning, advance innovation, and contribute to Sri Lanka’s technological development.

About Department...

The Department of Nano Science Technology, Faculty of Technology, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, provides undergraduate and postgraduate education and conducts research in materials science and nanotechnology. Its academic scope covers the synthesis, processing, characterisation, and application of materials, integrating chemistry, physics, biology, electronics, computing, environmental science, and engineering technology. Areas of study include polymers, ceramics, metals, composites, semiconductors, and functional nanomaterials.

The Department offers the Bachelor of Engineering Technology Honours Degree Programme in Material and Nano Science Technology, combining scientific foundations with laboratory learning, analytical methods, and project-based investigation. Its teaching and research address sustainable materials, value-added applications, and technologies for industrial, energy, environmental, agricultural, food, and biomedical applications, supporting careers in industry, research and development, and further postgraduate study. 

OUR FACILITIES

Computer laboratory

The computer lab is fully equipped with modern computers and high-speed internet, providing a great space for students and staff to learn, research, and work on digital projects. It supports practical learning and hands-on experience in various technology fields.

Nanotechnology Research
laboratory

Provides hands on experience in synthesizing advanced nanostructures, fabricating photovoltaic devices, and testing energy storage systems. Equipped with state of the art solar simulators and battery analyzers, it empowers students to connect molecular nanoscience theory with clean energy technologies.

Materials & Chemical Synthesis
laboratory

Offers practical training in chemical synthesis, nanoparticle formulation, and green chemistry processes. Equipped with precision fume hoods, ultrasonic homogenizers, and reaction setups, it allows students to transform raw chemical materials into functional nanoscale agricultural and environmental solutions.

Applied Nanotechnology & Thin Film laboratory

Provides training in fabricating nanostructured membranes, thin films, and functional micro-sensors. Equipped with spin coaters, dip coaters, and high-voltage electrospinning units, it helps students translate nanoscale concepts into practical industrial and technological applications.

Nanomaterials Characterization Laboratory

Delivers comprehensive experience in analyzing the structural, optical, and chemical properties of synthesized nanomaterials. Equipped with modern spectroscopy and analytical instrumentation, it enables students to verify nanoscale phenomena and bridge fundamental physics and chemistry with material testing

laboratory

The Electrical and Electronic laboratory provides hands-on experience in testing, designing, and troubleshooting circuits and electrical systems. Equipped with modern tools and components, it helps students connect classroom theory with practical engineering skills.

Telecommunication
laboratory

The Telecommunication laboratory is equipped with advanced communication tools and networking equipment for hands-on learning in signal processing, wireless communication, and network design. It provides a practical environment for students to explore modern communication technologies and systems.
